Let Me Tell You About My Operation (UTC 7)

This disc is doubtless Bourbon's most notorious. Bourbon claimed that on May 20, 1956 he underwent a sex change operation in Juarez, Mexico (where he lived much of the time). It was not true, but the publicity stunt gave Bourbon's career a boost. Newspaper clippings of the time suggest that there was more to the stunt than just publicity; perhaps it was a way to continue his outrageous act. Clubs across the country had begun to crack down on female impersonators (see UTC 9) and, indeed, just three months later, in August 1956, Bourbon was arrested for impersonating a female while working at the Melody Room on LA's Sunset Strip. He pled that he was, in fact, now female, but LA County Commissioners revoked club owner Jack Gordon's entertainment liscence, deeming the show indecent and labeling Bourbon "undesirable". Unperturbed, Bourbon opened a month later at LA's Ivar Theatre in a show called-quite pointedly-"She Lost It in Juarez?"
