78 RPM REDUBS, REISSUES
AND PIRACIES
A substantial number of Bourbon's recordings
were reissued on various labels. Some of these were legitimate
pressings from the original masters; many more were probably pirated
redubs. All but the Hollywood Hot Shots releases were anonymous.
Sorting these out is a daunting task, and the input and effort
of David Diehl, Warren Debenham and David McCain have proved invaluable
in this endeavor.
While these "bootleg" discs were
undoubtedly injurious to Bourbon's finances at the time, they
are boon to his discographers today. Several of his recordings
are known only from these anonymous discs and, for the collector
familiar with that distinctive voice and unique laugh, doubtless
many more await discovery.
Hollywood Hot Shots The successor to Hot Shots From Hollywood, who
replaced their earlier single-sided juke box releases with added
material for the flipside in order to avoid expected government
censorship (similar to the Hayes office) of juke boxes in the
late 1930's. It seems certain that all of Bourbon's releases on
this label were stamped from original Western Record Co./Bourbana
pressings as these discs carry that label's numbering in the runoff.
"Striptease
Queen" (Blank Label mx. X024) is the only recording here
that has not been positively identified as having previously been
released on Western Record Co./Bourbana; it was, however, almost
certainly recorded with those sessions. It later appears on the
Imperial label (q.v.)
as well some blank label discs. (q.v.)
Labels are yellow with black print.

- Miscellaneous Redubs on Various Labels At some point, it becomes impossible to track
all of the various repressings, retitling and redubs of Bourbon's
material. The following discs, dating from the 40's and 50's
are sorted by the original title, as best as can be deduced.
They are mostly taken from either Western Record Co./Bourbana
or Imperial material, and are probably all unauthorized. Unnumbered
discs which have numbers in brackets indicate a runoff or matrix
number. It is to be noted that most of the original Bourbana
releases appear on blank discs with the original runoff, indicating
they were created by the original stampers. Note, too, that there
are several Bourbana and Imperial releases which are on the Party
Record label with numbers in the 500-516 range. While there are
some Party Record discs known in this range which are not by
Bourbon, it seems likely that there are some as-yet unidentified
discs by him on this label in the 500 range.
